My early years were spent growing up in Sudbury Ontario, Canada, where early on I realized that science was going to be my future focus of study. Leaving the north I began my career in biology at McMaster University, where in my fourth year of my undergraduate, I completed my Honour's thesis in the lab of Dr. Michael O’Donnell studying ion transport in insect epithelia. I was hooked on insect physiology. I proceeded to complete both a MSc and a PhD in the O’Donnell lab. My PhD work focused on the transport of organic cations in insect epithelial. This continues to be a major part of research program in my current lab at UBC. It was during my PhD that I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching. As a PhD student I lectured in the Vertebrate anatomy course at McMaster and this resulted in a lecture position at Wilfrid Laurier University during the final year of my Ph.D.
After my time at McMaster I headed south for sunny Florida where I took up an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Biosciences in the laboratory of Dr. William Harvey. While there my research focused on ion transport in mosquitoes.
In 2007 I joined UBC at it's beautiful Kelowna Campus.I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology in the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences at The University of British Columbia in Kelowna, B.C.
I am the Principal Investigator of the Insect Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory.
